Next week the RA’s most intriguing exhibition, Intrigue: James Ensor by Luc Tuymans will open. So who was James Ensor?

An innovator and an outsider, Ensor rebelled against the conservative art teachings of the late 19th century academy in Brussels, drawn instead to the avant-garde salons where his radical creative vision could thrive and where he became one of Belgium’s most celebrated artist.
