Pandemic poses a tricky time for Irish horseracing

FRESH from his success at the Cheltenham Racing Festival in March, leading Irish horse trainer Colin Bowe from Wexford admitted recently that essential travel restrictions in light of the pandemic has placed the sport in a tricky time of job losses and earning capacity for up to 29,000 full time employees.

While maintaining strict adherence to government guidelines horse racing around the world has been suspended

The leading point-to-point handler enjoyed considerable success seeing three of his proteges, Envoi Allen, Ferney Hollow and Samcro racing to the win during the Cheltenham Festival.

“We will keep it going and see what happens,” said Colin Bowe while speaking on racing’s Inside Track TV. “Even though we did well there are some tricky times ahead.”

Horse Racing Ireland is continuing to engage with Government to initiate supports available for the thousands of people who have lost their jobs.

While the long-term effect as people stay at home to beat the pandemic back continues until mid-April at the earliest, the cessation of racing in Ireland is having major financial implications on the sport.

Meanwhile flat and harness racing continues in Australia, and in Hong Kong behind closed doors.

“We will play it by ear and see what happens,” added Colin Bowe.
