Beyond Caravaggio

Feel free to share:

At present there is a wonderful exhibition of paintings taking place at The National Gallery of Ireland. Caravaggio was born in Milan, and swiftly became the most famous painter of his time in Italy, and is to this day a source of inspiration for hundreds of followers. Caravaggio was forgotten almost immediately after his death, and it was only in the 20th century that his importance to the development of Western art was rediscovered. In the exhibition the dark, the light and the dramatic colours are woven through each and every event and activity, from traditional and expected to new and interpretive. Following exciting collaborations with a stellar collection of academics, artists, musicians and performers, there is something on offer for all ages, abilities and interests. A must see!

Also on display at the exhibition Beyond Caravaggio at The National Gallery of Ireland is some pieces by Heindrick ter Bruggen (1588-1629). This includes “Concert”, which is an oil on canvas. It was bought with contributions from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, The Art Fund and The Pilgrim Trust.
