NCAD students ‘In Cahoots’ at In-spire Galerie in Dublin
THE 3rd Year Paint Group at the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) were in cahoots with each other when they mounted the first ever off-campus exhibition earlier this month at In-spire Galerie in Dublin, Ireland.
Opened jointly by NCAD Head of Fine Arts Professor Philip Napier on Thursday, 9th January, the ‘lush’ exhibition in multimedia showcased outside of a university campus environment, the raw and emerging talent of nearly 40 young artists participating in the programme.
“Being in cahoots, of course it seems like five minutes ago that this work was in the studio,” said Philip Napier. “If you don’t turn up and make these things, there is nothing going on so well done, they are beautifully done. I am aware of all sorts of things, works on paper, tight against the wall, boxy frames, thick against the wall, other things that are beyond.”
Exclusive work in North Side independent contemporary art gallery featured abstract and surreal qualities along with contemporary takes on master painters and portraiture.
Mark O’Kelly, NCAD Head of Paint Department expressed his pride in the talent of 3rd Year students participating in their debut off-campus exhibition, saying, “This is very important for the city of Dublin because you have taken the initiative to do these kinds of shows in the future,” when he jointly opened the exhibition. “The artists and visual artists and creative people have a great generosity of spirit, adding a lot to the life of this city, a real credit to the students of the college and a real credit to all the people who put this together.”
Works on display until Thursday, 16th January were by students currently attending NCAD along with European exchange students in the Erasmus programme who have since returned to their home countries.
“We wanted to have a show before we split up as a group, an exhibition as a group to celebrate that,” said 3rd Year student, Sarah Beegan about the show she organised with classmate John Tierney. Sarah will shortly begin her practical art teacher assignment to second level students in County Kildare, Ireland.
“We are all in cahoots,” she added, “and that is where the title came from.”
Curated by Dino Notaro, In-spire Art Gallery will host ‘Mexico + Me’, a group exhibition of more than 30 photographers in collaboration with DLonngi Art Gallery, Mexico from Thursday, 23rd January at 6pm.
