Can Tenet Save Movie Theaters?

The numbers are in—and they don’t look good for Hollywood. Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated Tenet has made less than $30 million in the U.S. since opening stateside on September 3, a performance that has apparently led studios to pull or postpone even more big-budget blockbusters. That, in turn, will give the American public even less incentive to return to the movies—at least until the pandemic finally ebbs.

Elsewhere in HWD, Katey Rich and Richard Lawson review a pair of starry Toronto International Film Festival releases; the brains behind Our Cartoon President explains his show’s equal-opportunity offense; and contributor Chris Feil declares that the Academy’s new Oscars inclusion rules actually don’t go far enough.
