In conversation with 3 young creatives

This week on the RA blog Imogen West-Knights catches up with three young creatives as they prepare to exhibit in this year’s Young Artist’s Summer Show.

From Lois’s oil painting, Dappled Light (above), which one of this year’s judges, Bob & Roberta Smith RA, describes as ‘worthy of William Blake’, to Omotayo’s self portrait partially made using fabric from his mum’s traditional Nigerian dresses, their works represent the breadth of creativity and skill that will be demonstrated in the Clore Learning Centre this Autumn.

The Young Artists’ Summer Show will run from 18 Oct – 22 Nov 2020. A timed ticket to a paid exhibition gives access to this show and our other displays, or book a free ticket just for this show.

Celebrating the start of the Summer Exhibition 2020

Varnishing Day has been celebrated at the RA each year since the Summer Exhibition began, named for the day when artists applied a layer of varnish to their finished submissions to protect them. Turner famously used to turn up and paint from scratch before joining the other artists for a boozy lunch.

This year we’ve done things differently… To commemorate the varnishing day that should have been, our community of RA’s created artworks for a portfolio, available exclusively to Friends for £195.
