A Message from Patrick T. Murphy, RHA Director

As we publish this newsletter on Monday 19 October we await further announcements by the government this evening on an increased levels of restrictions to combat the growing rates of Covid-19 in our society.

The RHA has been closed under Level 3 restrictions since early October. Since installing the 190th Annual Exhibition in September we now have passed two dates on which we planned to open the exhibition to the public. It now seems likely that it will be mid-November before the next window of opportunity arises. And if this is so, we may get five weeks in which you can safely visit and view this exciting exhibition. It is different this year for two reasons. One, the first round of selection was via digital submissions which meant we got a great deal more artists sharing their work with us, and many of them were new to us as they will be to you. Secondly, due to the sad passing of Michael Cullen RHA whom has installed the exhibition for the past decade, this year’s layout was conducted by the painter Donald Teskey RHA and you can sense the new eye in the phrasing and pace of the exhibition.

And while we are more than a little dismayed that we have not already welcomed you into the space we are delighted that for the first time in its history the entire exhibition will be available to view online from tomorrow! As one of our loyal members of the Friends of the RHA, we are delighted to give you a 24 hour preview and a first look at the 190th RHA Annual Exhibition viewing rooms here: VIP LINK For Friends of the RHA

I hope you not only enjoy seeing the show in this format but you will support the individual artist by purchasing their work online. It really is the best compliment to an artist to purchase their labours and provide them with the financial and moral support that spurs them on to make more work.

Artists and art institutions gained a milestone in last week’s budget as the government allocated a record-breaking and truly necessary €130 million to the Arts Council for 2021 (up from €80 million this time last year). It not only puts heft behind the oft times politically quoted “creativity of the nation” but builds confidence in artists and organisations that there will be the capacity to weather the storm of the coming year. Our commitment for 2021 is to ensure that artists receive as much support as we can provide through fees, commissioning new work, engagement programmes, teaching fees and studio provision – echoing our successful #ReallyHelpingArtists initiative of past summer.

We have an exciting programme lined up for 2021 and do hope that if we all increase our efforts to diminish the effect of the pandemic that you can come to the gallery and experience the exhibitions and programmes we plan in a safe and controlled environment. So socially distance, wash hands and wear your mask, we want to see you back at the RHA!
