Joseph O’Brien’s Twilight Payment triumphs over dad Aidan’s Tiger Moth at Flemington
THOROUGHBRED horseracing trainer Joseph O’Brien has turned in a second win over dad Aidan in the Lexus Melbourne Group 1 contest at Flemington Racecourse in Australia.
The former jockey-turned-trainer marked his first win with Rekindling in 2017, racing home ahead of O’Brien snr’s Johannes Vermeer in the same distance as won by Twilight Payment with Jye McNeil aboard ahead of second-place Tiger Moth.
“Jye gave the horse a fantastic ride,” said Joseph O’Brien after winning the Melbourne Cup for the second time. “I was worried he might have got a bit of pressure on the lead but the horse has an incredible heart and Jye gave him a fantastic ride and he has a huge will to win.”
The winning horse, like Rekindling is owned by Australian businessman Lloyd Williams.
Joseph O’Brien added: “It’s a privilege to train for the people that I train for and the horses that we have.”
