HRH Prince Bandar Bin Khalid Al Faisal, Chairman of the Jockey Club of Saudi Arabia has announced the second renewal of the $20 million World’s richest horserace as well as a prize money increase and a new international race. AMATEUR jockeys will not be permitted to ride at the UK’s Cheltenham Festival in March due to current levels of Covid-19 restrictions. A spokesperson for the Amateur Jockeys Association has confirmed that while the decision is regrettable, the title of ‘amateur’ prohibits all amateur jockey participation. Races including the highly touted St James’s Place Foxhunter Chase and all Festival amateur races will instead be ridden by professional jockeys.
IRISH amateur polo player John Flavin has had his first horseracing Flat winner at Dundalk Stadium in Louth Ireland with jockey Chris Hayes on five-year-old gelding Doyouthinkso. It was the first Flat winner on 1 February for the Waterford Ireland trainer who has already measured success since taking over the trainer’s licence from his father, Pat Flavin, twice over hurdles with racehorse Street Value who gave him his first winner at Clonmel Ireland in January.
