ONE of Ireland’s most historic country houses, the centuries-old Carton House in the Thoroughbred County of Kildare will be unveiled this summer following a multimillion euro refurbishment of two years.

The refurbished Carton House in Kildare Ireland will reopen this summer as one of the most stunning historic properties in the Fairmont Hotels collection

The former home to the Earls of Kildare and now part of the Fairmont Managed Hotel collection, American businessman and owner John Mullen has closely overseen refurbishments to create a new chapter in the story of one of Ireland’s historic estates.

“This has been a labour of love for myself and my family and the extended teams of specialists and experts who have worked on every detail of this large and complex project,” said John Mullen in a statement to the County Kildare Chamber. “We could not be more proud and delighted to share the magnificent refurbishment of Carton House to our first guests this summer. It has been a challenging time for hospitality businesses everywhere so we are happy to be able to offer a positive good news story, writing a new chapter in the story of this splendid and historic estate.”

State rooms within the 18th century Palladian-style mansion including the Gold Salon, Drawing Room, the Morrison Room and Bell Room have been faithfully restored and will soon be ready to receive hotel guests.

Original bedrooms as well as a further 151 curving around formal gardens have been restored and enhanced as part of the estate’s transformation while elements have been added to the entire house to enhance guest experience.

The Carriage House has been refurbished and will offer food and refreshments

“Carton House is a spectacular estate with a history spanning more than eight centuries and a staggering historic house dating back to 1739,” said Accor Luxury Europe COO Marc Dardenne. “It is a property befitting the grandest of hotel brands and we are proud to open its doors this summer as part of our world-renowned Fairmont portfolio.”

Set on the River Rye and home to the Irish international rugby team, the walled estate of more than 1,000 acres boasts a wealth of outdoor activities and spa and wellness centre as well as two championship eighteen-hole golf courses, the links style designed by Colin Montgomerie and the classic parkland course by Mark O’Meara.
