“I like using the immediate recognition of a face as a starting point. I like the fact that you literally have eye-contact with a portrait.”
—Andrew Mania

1
Andrew Mania was born in Bristol, England in 1974. He studied at the University of West England, Falmouth College of Art, and
Chelsea College of Art.

2
Mania is best known for his portraits of young subjects who often stare straight toward the viewer, evoking the qualities of a religious icon.

3
In 2009, Mania joined forces with Converse and the Product Red charity to design a sneaker. One side of the shoe reads “This is not a shoe,” while the other says “It’s a Mania.”

4
Mania often draws using iconic photographic portraits of celebrities as reference images, and he blurs the line between reality and surreality.

5
At the 2018 Oscars, producer and screenwriter James Ivory accepted the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Call Me by Your Name while wearing a shirt decorated by Andrew Mania depicting the face of the film’s lead actor, Timothée Chalamet.

6
Mania’s work can be found in the private collection of Sir Elton John.

7
He was the recipient of the Rome Scholarship in 2004, and has since shown internationally at venues such as the Guggenheim Museum in New York, Tablet Gallery in London, and Patricia Faure Gallery in Santa Monica.
