Alexander McQueen’s Creative director Sarah Burton showed an astonishing Spring / Summer 2022 collection in a transparent bubble cloud ‘tent’ on top of a carpark. London weather wasn’t quite the star of the show, but it most definitely was more than the sidekick: typical for October a cocktail of intermittent sunshine, rain, clouds and a fresh breeze offered the backdrop to the clothes, that were, in many ways, commentary on the British weather and, in fact, in a metaphorical sense, on how we’re all weathering the (pandemic) storm.
Dresden-blue tie-dyed cinched-in-the-waist dresses mimicked the mottled blue skies outside, voluminous milkmaids’ skirts mirrored the grey cumulus nimbus clouds, generously proportioned belted camel trench coats shouted British Autumn and some of the chiffon and tulle gowns were so wispy and fragile a light breeze would blow them away. The sleeves on a particularly lovely white coat resembled puffy white rainclouds and was soon followed by a bright sunshine yellow sundress. There was leather, there was denim, there were combinations of leather and denim reminiscent of Eighties Mugler. It was a visual feast of epic proportions, with far too many must-have, uber covetable and utterly wearable pieces for one single collection. Big sigh.
