We’ve already given you a glimpse of the buzzing activity backstage at Mozambique Fashion Week, of the apres fashion and the general vibe, but what about the actual fashion?
The clothes at Mozambique Fashion Week unashamedly echoed the ethos of the African continent in their stunning vibrancy, quintessential regional printed fabrics & dyes and their casual, easy-going and contemporary shapes. And unsurprisingly colour was one of the superstars of the shows: bold, feisty and flamboyant! Earthy tones were to be seen in many collections and the star shade of the shows was definitely yellow in all its cheery guises, from mustard to chartreuse, from sunshine yellow to lime. White often served to beautifully juxtapose the nudes, browns and bright prints.
There were oodles of the coolest street fashion to drool over, plenty sporty pieces that reflected the active African vibe, forward-thinking avant-garde pieces that made one fall in love with fashion all over again, tiny little peekaboo lingerie & swimwear (quite befitting for a nation that boasts some of the most beautiful beaches and balmy waters in the world), dramatic, sweeping ballgowns, cute cocktail dresses, cheeky party pieces and so much more.
Designers from all over Africa (including many local Mozambiquan designers and a handful of designers invited from neighbouring South Africa) took part in what can only be described as a week of Fashion passion. The swimwear, lingerie and loungewear were striking in their sultry seductiveness – this evidently is a nation that spends a lot of time on their astonishingly beautiful beaches! There were sexy little cocktail dresses and dramatic, sweeping ballgowns, the bold colours and exotic prints in most of the ensembles – so at home under the African sun – were out on the runway in full force, the young designers wowed with their forward-thinking avant-garde creations. There was some meticulous tailoring too, and the accessorizing – from hats to shoes – were inspired.
The quality of the collections was second to none. The young designers wowed with their forward-thinking creations, most notably so Nuno Jota Jota and Fahed Gaspar, whose offerings were amongst the best in the shows. Other designers that stood out were amongst others: Sober, Saint Vuyo, the BAM Collective, Nelson Guttu, Cuccla, Amylicious, Chibaia, Anatelles, Omar Adelino, Ephymol and Michael Ludwig Studio.
A Social Responsibility Campaign placing the emphasis squarely on sustainability, was also part of the proceedings together with workshops throughout the year to raise awareness of the Fashion industry’s role in keeping its carbon footprint to the minimum. Also in the arsenal of this all-encompassing forward-thinking fashion week was a Range Planning Workshop for Designers as well as a Models’ Workshop in preparation for the main week.
Let’s allow the clothes to do the rest of the talking! Without delay, let’s enjoy a snapshot of all the vibrancy and creativity on offer at Mozambique Fashion Week.
