And the Cannes Awards Will Go To…
Awards speculation is, of course, a year-round preoccupation for us at Little Gold Men, but with the Cannes Film Festival in full swing, we have good reason to be excited. On Saturday, the festival jury—led by Ruben Östlund and including the likes of Brie Larson, Paul Dano, and Julia Ducournau—will hand out this year’s awards, including what might be the most prestigious film prize in the world, the Palme d’Or. As Richard Lawson and Rebecca Ford report from Cannes on this week’s podcast, it’s exceedingly tough to predict each year’s Palme—with a different jury every year, there’s no past precedent to rely on. But that won’t stop us from trying.
On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, Richard and Rebecca share their highlights from Cannes, including starry premieres of films like Asteroid City and Killers of the Flower Moon, somber stunners like The Zone of Interest, and the Pedro Almodóvar short film that was so popular it nearly caused a riot. No matter who goes home with awards from Cannes, it seems clear that at least a few titles will come up again during the fall awards season, and of course the Oscars. Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon has received the warm reception you might expect for a project by an acclaimed master, but the film’s true breakout might be Lily Gladstone, whom Rebecca talked to ahead of what we predict will be many, many months on the awards circuit.
The episode also includes a conversation with David Canfield about his new reporting on the push to de-gender awards shows. Yellowjackets star Liv Hewson weighs in on their decision not to submit for this year’s Emmy Awards, while Last of Us breakout Bella Ramsey shares their decision to compete in the best-actress category, even though that’s a title they don’t identify with. As Ramsey tells David, “I don’t want the limitations, in terms of the language in the categories, to be a reason that nonbinary actors like me can’t be celebrated.”
