At the Palace of Holyroodhouse
Bonnie Prince Charlie
In September 1745, Prince Charles Edward Stuart, better known as Bonnie Prince Charlie, entered Edinburgh at the head of the Jacobite troops, cheered on by around 60,000 locals. He held court at the Palace of Holyroodhouse for the next six weeks. This 19th-century painting by John Pettie shows the Prince entering the Great Gallery to attend a ball.
