The 15th Academy Annual Governors Awards
The 15th Academy Annual Governors Awards
The Academy Annual Governors Awards is often a favorite event for Hollywood insiders, as it allows industry icons who have been otherwise overlooked by the Oscars to finally get their due. The event, which is not televised, has a warm and leisurely pace, giving the honorees and those who are honoring them time to properly look back on their careers, and thank the many people who got them to that stage. As Rebecca Ford writes, this year’s ceremony—which took place Sunday night—had a special resonance: honoree Quincy Jones died just weeks before he would have accepted his own honorary Oscar. “In some ways it was a difficult decision for our family to be here tonight,” the music legend’s daughter Rashida Jones said from the stage. “But we felt we wanted to celebrate his beautiful life and career.”
Elsewhere in HWD, Jordan Hoffman details the best movies currently on Hulu; Allison Williams revisits Girls for VF’s Still Watching podcast; Lisa Liebman dives into the documentary that Benjamin Netanyahu doesn’t want you to see; and Charli XCX extends Brat summer another few months as SNL’s host and musical guest.
