Immerse into the new year with select wines of Argentina

THE start of the new year is an ideal opportunity to immerse into select wines from Argentina, and the second held late last year of two sister events presented a variety of vibrant and fascinating insights from suppliers and aficionados assembled at the residence of the Embassy of Argentina in Ireland.

The wine trade in Argentina is as unique as the grape types grown, the region and the land at their source and Irish distributors are taking notice. While distribution is limited across multiple supermarket chains they can be found among specialty shops and restaurants around the country: the best answer to source the best is the good old search engine, which will locate boutique retail shops nationwide and nearby.

The select availability of wines of Argentina confirms their brilliance and with consumption falling, it is the perfect time to invest just a little more in superb quality: “Overall, wine consumption has come down,” said a spokesperson for the Embassy of Argentina in Ireland. “The younger generation is saying that it (drinking wine) is not seen as healthy as it once was. People are spending more and drinking less. They are buying at the higher end. They are looking for quality over quantity.”

In the increasingly rarified world of higher end, quality wines there aren’t many that make the grade as a wine of Argentina. The expert advice confirms that lower consumption is the perfect occasion to upgrade vintage, particularly among peak 40- to 60-year-old consumers while the 18- to 35-year-old demographic is following close behind.

As the younger generation is catching on to meeting lower consumption with quality wines, the large multiple supermarkets are catching up as well: “It may not be a great selection, but what they have is excellent wine,” added the embassy’s spokesperson.
