So Whos Going to Win Cannes This Year?
The Cannes Film Festival 2025 is almost over, which means it’s time to start thinking about who’s going to leave the Croisette with some prizes.
If you’ve been listening to Little Gold Men, you know we’ve been prognosticating all week, with David Canfield and Richard Lawson calling in from Cannes for daily episodes hosted by Rebecca Ford. Some of our favorites so far include Joachim Trier’s Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value, Kleber Mendonça Filho’s Brazilian historical thriller The Secret Agent, and Jafar Panahi’s caustic Iranian shocker It Was Just an Accident. That these happen to be front-runners for the Palme d’Or, in our estimation, is maybe no coincidence: They’ve been widely, passionately acclaimed on the ground in Cannes.
On today’s episode, the hosts go in depth on Sentimental Value, which features terrific performances from Trier veteran Renate Reinsve and newcomer Stellan Skarsgård, as well as The History of Sound, the queer period drama starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor. They seem like two of the few movies this year that will be jetting off the Croisette with some serious awards buzz in their sails. Earlier this week, we discussed Jennifer Lawrence’s tour de force in Die, My Love, which Mubi just acquired in a blockbuster $24 million deal. It’s a tough, arty movie—so when you see a high price tag like that, know the studio has their sights set on some gold.
