Kwaidan at the National Concert Hall will linger with you long after the credits roll while Songs of the Spirits: East Meets West invites you to cross the spectral veil in this musical ode in honour of the dead.
KWAIDAN
Screening with Live Musical Score
This Hallowe’en weekend, step into a world where Japanese legends and Irish culture unite: Kwaidan.
This unique event, which will have its world premiere at Expo 2025 in Osaka, presents the iconic Japanese film Kwaidan, based on four of Lafcadio Hearn’s beloved ghost stories, with a specially-commissioned new live score, composed by Matthew Nolan and Seán Mac Erlaine, accompanied by Japanese musician Tomoko Sauvage. Alongside the film and the score, acclaimed actor Conor Lovett (Gare St Lazare Ireland) will perform a traditional Japanese-style narration, which is directed by Jude Hegarty Lovett (Gare St Lazare Ireland).

Songs of the Spirits: East meets West
Inspired by the ancient rituals of Oíche Shamhna and Japan’s Festival of Obon, this performance by Schola Hyberniae explores and celebrates the universal human desire to honour and remember the dead.
Following its premiere in Osaka at Expo 2025, Dublin audiences are invited to experience the ethereal beauty of Gregorian chant, Irish song, and haunting Japanese choral traditions woven together by some of Ireland’s most acclaimed vocalists.
