September at the National Gallery of Ireland brings a varied programme of exhibitions, talks, screenings, performances and creative events. The highlight is Hilma af Klint: Artist and Visionary, the first major exhibition dedicated to the Swedish artist’s work in Ireland, featuring paintings, drawings and water colours. Alongside the exhibition, visitors can explore Art, Migration and the Politics of Belonging, a week-long programme running from 14 – 20 September. With events focused on art, identity, migration, citizenship and representation, there is plenty to explore at the Gallery this September.

Hilma af Klint: Artist and Visionary – Tickets on sale now

Hilma af Klint is recognised as one of Europe’s foremost abstract painters and is one of Sweden’s most celebrated modern artists. Hilma af Klint: Artist and Visionary, developed in partnership with the Hilma af Klint Foundation, features paintings, drawings and watercolours, marking the first major exhibition dedicated to the artist’s work in Ireland.

Tickets are on sale now from free to €16, and under 18s go free. You can also purchase a catalogue bundle ticket for €53 on our website. Friends of the National Gallery of Ireland go free!

Art, Migration and Belonging

Art, Migration and the Politics of Belonging

This September, the Education Department partners with Maynooth University and HIDDEN (History of Identity Documentation in European Nations) to host a week of events exploring the key themes of citizenship, identity, migration, language and representation, culminating in a public symposium on 18 September.

Taking place from 14-20 September, explore the programme of events below:

  • Arbitrary Nations: contemporary artist Asbestos leads this site-specific installation.
  • Library and Archive Display: a special display to explore themes of migration, identity and citizenship throughout our archives.
  • Film Screening, Aisha (2022): a screening of Frank Berry’s award-winning drama exploring migration, asylum and belonging.
  • Public Symposium: established and emerging artists, writers, academics, activists, journalists and cultural practitioners from Ireland and abroad will examine how art can illuminate the complex realities of migration, citizenship, identity and belonging.
  • Musical performance, Citadel: live performances by world music collective Citadel.
  • Youth Lab: Arbitrary Nations: an open creative workshop to explore the themes of identity, borders and belonging.
