SuperValu Spanish Wine Sale starts Feb 13th
SuperValu Spanish Wine Sale will take place in store and online from 13th of February to 4th of March, 2020. Spain is now the third most popular country of origin with the Irish consumer, second only to Chile and Australia. Ten years ago, Spanish wines sales were mostly red wines, but today Spanish white wines now account for 22% of all Spanish wine sales, reflecting the quality and diversity of white wine from Spain especially from regions including DO Rias Biaxas and DO Rueda.
At the SuperValu Spanish tasting, their wine buyer Kevin O’Callaghan highlighted a number of exciting white wines on offer, including our featured wine, made from the “lost” grape Verdosilla. Kevin said that finding wines such as the limited edition Vinas de Paniza Edition as well as oak aged Spanish Chardonnay, made for an interesting sale. SuperValu will a introduce 15 Special Guest Wines available on a limited basis for the duration of the sale.
2018 Vincente Gandia Ostras Pedrini Verdosilla DO Valencia €10
This is a very unique white wine. It is made by winemaker Luís García Severino from a local grape called Verdosilla, a rare golden yellow grape unique to this region. The grape has very distinctive lemon and lime flavours and you’ll find plenty of those lovely fresh flavours in this wine. The ABV is light at 11.5% which means this is a perfect wine to serve at lunch, especially if you’re counting calories. The wine also has a lovely grassy character to it, not dissimilar to Sauvignon Blanc and a lovely ripe fruit flavor that goes on forever. This wine is ideal to serve with any sort of oily fish, especially smoked mackerel or salmon.
