Lola Donoghue, who works full time as both a mother and an artist in Galway. She explained the theme behind her work for the exhibition.

She shared: ‘Basically my work is influenced by my role as a mother as a female artist and the hierarchies within motherhood, I suppose that we impose on each other and ourselves’

‘The stay at home moms, the nine to fivers who hand over their children daily and then the hierarchy within the art world as well, you know full-time artists versus part-time artists and mothers and where I fit into these worlds.’

Lola also spoke about the difficulty in trying to find your place in being both a mother and artist, but being able to be successful in both. She said: ‘My last collection was called Cheer. It was about the Cheer’s of success at being both a mother and an artist and the different definitions of success in these hierarchies.’

‘Being a mother, you experience a constant pull and push between the two. As a mother you’re constantly needed, you’re at the epicenter of others’ needs, and as an artist, you have a constant need to create.’

When it comes to her work now, she revealed she’s working with toys for her exhibition in Atelier Maser:

‘Currently, I’m working with toys, I’m doing various drawings from them, and it’s all to do with the emotions of being a mother. Funnily enough, it’s all in abstract.’

Assemble is the first-ever group exhibition presented by Atelier Maser during the year with dates to be confirmed.
