Burt’s Bees was founded in the early 1980s by Burt Shavitz and Roxanne Quimby. Before launching the brand, Burt worked as a photojournalist in Manhattan, and Roxanne was an artist living in San Francisco. They were both living incredibly hectic lives so they decided independently to leave their respective cities behind to seek and head for the freedom of the remote, pristine wilderness of Maine on the US’s North East Coast.
Burt settled into a new life as the local “bee man” after finding a stray beehive and learning how to eke out a living selling honey. One day, Burt pulled over for a hitchhiking Roxanne, and the two hit it off. Burt taught Roxanne about his bees, and she found a book of recipes which they used to turn their waxy bounty into things like candles (in 1984) and lip balm (in 1991—that one turned out to be a keeper). Between them they started the business with Burt providing the raw materials and Roxanne selling the products at local fairs.
After many years in Maine the business relocated to North Carolina where the brand has grown exponentially. Burt passed away in 2015 and Roxanne sold her share to begin working to safeguard wild spaces for generations to come. She started a philanthropic foundation, and gave $90 million to charities, and bought over 120,000 acres of Maine woodland making it off limits to hunters and loggers and eventually she donated over 87,000 acres to the US National Park Service.
To this day Burt’s Bees keeps their founders’ ethos of being earth-friendly and producing products from natural ingredients. There ethos is now enshrined in the Greater Good initiative which means there’s no animal testing, all their ingredients are responsibly sourced, recyclable packaging is used, they avoid over packaging, and all their products are free from phthalates, parabens, petrolatum and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS). Additionally, they have landfill-free operations, are CarbonNeutral certified, and they offset their annual water consumption through watershed restoration projects.
