As for the clothes? They were very Osman-ish and demonstrated, alongside some of his former best collections, that he is a great designer when not overwhelmed by the sound and fury of circumstance. Like many others, he has embraced upcycling and the use of deadstock, a process he is terming “The Last Yard.” The result was a capsule of precisely 50 pieces due for sale through 10 retailers, a decline from his former 100 that the designer said he welcomed as a form of production mindfulness. These pieces, price point depending, should perform well for them, especially full-skirt wrap dresses in block-print fabrics made in Pakistan, under layered wedding jewelry that spoke to Osman’s Afghan heritage; crazy-fun taffeta-strip pom-pom frocks; and a properly fabulous mustard-toned high-waist pant in found Italian satin viscose given powerful definition by box pleating and a high-flying cut.

OSMAN YOUSEFZADA (Birmingham United Kingdom)

Since launching his eponymous label in 2008, Osman Yousefzada has forged a niche in luxury womenswear with an intellectual approach to design, exploring the cross pollination with other creative disciplines, garnering numerous awards. The designer and artist works at the intersection of art and fashion, combining his multi-disciplinary design practice with a strong sense of social commentary. His work is shaped by a personal consideration of the contemporary fashion world and the industry’s inherent inequalities, juxtaposed with representations associated with the experience of immigration.
