Milan fashion week takes off today, September 23, and just like its predecessors New York and London, it is guaranteed to be a spectacular and historic week. Never has there been such an indisputable crossover between fashion content and form, between collections’s aesthetic and the reinvention of their public display. As the industry continues to navigate its way through life post-lockdown, constant inventive spirit is required from all industry actors in order to counter the ever-changing risk factors linked to the uncontrollable coronavirus. This has meant that this year’s fashion events have been much more of a digital affair, with a few live shows still going ahead as planned.

The September 2020 edition of Milan fashion week has been wittily described as a “phygital” showcase by Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana (CNMI)‘s president Carlo Capasa, with the blending of 25 digital shows and 27 physical events. Pynck outlines here a complete guide of the best shows for you to view from your own home.

WHERE TO WATCH

It will be possible to watch the shows of the Milan fashion week on the website of the National Chamber of Italian Fashion where a continuous livestream of shows, collection look books, exclusive content, and backstage interviews will be broadcasted to the world. You can also tune in on the Facebook, Instagram and Youtube pages of the brands you fancy, through screens that will be positioned in the center of the city if you are lucky enough to call Milan your home, or obviously through Pynck’s social media channels and website. We will be posting plenty on highlights, special picks and big names.

Missoni will kick things off with a digital presentation where Angela Missoni will explain the project of the new advertising campaign as well as the broader thinking behind a significant shifting in the calendar of the presentations. The first Big Live Show will be Fendi, at 3 p.m. followed by Dolce & Gabanna at 8pm. Also going live are Alberta Ferretti and DSQUARED2.

SS20 Prada
MaxMara will start the day, as it usually did during previous MFW, at 9:30 a.m with a show that promises to get us back in the saddle of exquisite Italian craftsmanship. Genny will then be at 10.30 am followed by Armani, Vien, Luisa Beccasria and Etro. But the real hight point of the day and the one show everyone is talking about is Prada at 2 p.m. The first collection by the creative directors Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons, two of fashion’s most respected and acute thinkers, will be showcased digitally. It must also be noted LVMH Prize finalist Sindiso Khumalo will make her debut at Milan fashion week in digital form on Thursday too.

SS20 BOSS

Friday’s line-up is vast and precise. Boss is back in Milan after a few quiet season in New York and is set to be one of the stand-out names featured in the live catwalk schedule. It is followed immediately by digital shows : Tod’s at 3 p.m. and Marni at 4 p.m which we are awaiting with vivid curiosity as the two directors, Francesco Risso for Marni and Walter Chiapponi for Tod’s, have proven to be one of the most interesting new names in the Italian fashion panorama in the last half-decade. Digital reveals to bear in mind also are obviously those of our two favourite enfants terribles, Philipp Plein and Versace which will present at 8pm and 9pm respectively.

SS20 Ermanno Scervino
 

First up is Ermanno Scervino at 1pm. The florentine lovechild of Toni Scervino and Ermanno Daelli is celebrating its 20th anniversary next year and we cannot wait to see how the brand will further its multifaceted approach to the Italian heritage it cherishes. Then will follow Emilio Pucci and Moschino (with a super-secret film project) which are among the big names included in Saturday’s packed digital line-up. Be sure not to miss Tomo Koizumi x Pucci collaboration, a digital reveal of the Japanese designer’s one-season-only vision for the brand. And of course, Salvatore Ferragamo and Giorgio Armani will be closing the day.

SS2020 Valentino

Curtain-raiser MSGM will open the penultimate day of Milan fashion week. Will follow the unveiling of the “Spotlight on Lebanese Designers” in support of those affected by the Beirut explosion on August 4. It will also be the day of  MM6 Maison Margiela and Ji Won Choi Milan fashion week debut. We are keeping are eyes peeled for the shows. Last but not least, Valentino, which normally presents collection in Paris, has graced Milan with a one-time-only show, combining this season’s men and women collections in an effort to protect employees and support the Italian fashion system.

The final day of Milan fashion week only  features two womenswear collections. Make sure to make a note of these to digital shows. Alexandra Moura’s fearless conceptual avant-garde collections and award-winning Miguel Viera’s elegant displays are worth the detour.
