For a woman who has been quoted as saying, ‘romanticism is a manifestation of strength, not of weakness’ Alberta Ferretti certainly put her money where her mouth is in this Fall 2021 collection. In keeping with the way she chose to present her collection – as real as was possible under the circumstances (a runway show rather than artsy film), her signature romantic style also got the reality treatment. The result? A collection for strong women who don’t need to expose much bare skin to feel sensual, but don’t be fooled – this collection was certainly not without its fair share of frivolities and escapism.

One of the few pieces in the collection that showed some bare skin!

Having kicked off with a very wearable, albeit somewhat sombre palette of anthracite, charcoal and black, the collection soon progressed through a very interesting colour journey as ‘off’ greens like sage, petrol green and olive were introduced, first in supporting roles and eventually as key players. In similar fashion ochre, mustard, camel, coffee, chartreuse and the most endearing shade of duck-egg blue were subsequently introduced into the mix for daywear. The blues soon became double denim pieces – predictable, practical and covetable in their flattering ease.

Models clutched oversized fringed leather handbags close to their bodies as if using them as a means of protection. In similar vein poncho-like coats edged in blanket stitching and fuzzy textured dressing gown-shaped coats enveloped and hugged models’ bodies. Models sported sleek, glamorous platform heels and the minimalist look was perfected by sharp, wide brim hats in complimentary hues. Gold accessories – very striking dangly floral earrings, brooches and belt buckles – were introduced right from the start as accents foreshadowing the opulence that was to come towards the end of the show.

Without a doubt the undisputed queen of seductive eveningwear, Alberta Ferretti’s collection wouldn’t have been complete without its fair share of this veteran designer’s glamorous offerings – a category in which she clearly feels most at home. A liquid black leather suit was that crossover piece in the collection where daywear morphed into eveningwear. The introduction of a sequined suit heralded the start of nocturnal sparkle! Gold trousers, dripping with shaggy sequins amped up the volume and were followed by one of the show stopping pieces in the collection, a gold sequined gown that one could immediately picture on the red carpet at the Oscars.

Alberta Ferretti said of this collection, ‘the present time thrives on dichotomies and contradictions. It asks for reassuring gestures while inciting decisive actions.’

Her minimalistic collection sends a clear message: let’s be realistic, let’s be strong, the show must go on. And these confidence-giving, enveloping pieces with their protective textures – like security blankets – will go a long way in helping us cope with the present as well as embrace the future.
