Plants Got The Power!

Over the past 11 months of lockdown, many of us have taken the time to explore new food choices. With the supermarket shop nearly our only outing of the week and the thrill of the ‘driver will be with you shortly’ notification the nearest thing to a restaurant we have experienced in almost a year, food has taken centre stage in our life. On our recent Future of Food webinar (listen to it here), the panel talked all about the food industry, including the power of plants.

There are some exciting new developments in the plant-based food sector, which are appealing to the growing number of flexitarians in Ireland. In supermarkets, we see brands such as Strong Roots continuing to expand its range, Marks and Spencer’s now has Plant Kitchen, and Tesco has Wicked Kitchen, created in collaboration with Derek and Chad Sarno.

Even takeaways and fast-food outlets are getting in on the act. According to Plant Based IrelandDeliveroo saw plant based food orders increase 187% during the COVID-19 lockdown period, with Dublin and Cork being the most popular locations. Burger King’s Impossible Whopper looks super tasty (in the ads anyway!), and there are lots of home delivery plant-based options to choose from, from spicey cauliflower wings and meat-free hot-dogs to pitta gyros and vegan nuggets!

In January, plant-based restaurant ONA was awarded a Michelin Star, making it the first restaurant of its kind in France to be honoured with this award. Nearer to home, Ireland’s first vegan bakery, Bear Lemon, opened in Drumcondra at the start of the year selling moreish cakes and an in-house oat-based ice cream, ‘Bear Oats’.
