The mola textile artist places two or three pieces of different colored cloth on top of each other and bastes them together. Then she cuts into the top layer, cutting out her design as the colored fabrics show through.

Print by master woodblock artist Utagawa Hiroshige, (1797-1858.) Hiroshsige was a Japanese ukiyo-e artist, considered the last great master of that tradition. This is a print of the premier shopping street in Tokyo with the finest stores in 1856. The department store Echigoya shown here on both sides of the street is still going strong in Japan as the Mitsukoshi department store today. I visited this street and Mitsukoshi while in Japan a few years back. There were no donkeys going down the street, but it was just as busy. 1st Dibs.
