WineLab launch Bagnums (Bag in Box) for summer
Bag in Box, which stored wine in a a vacum sealed bag never held any appeal for the Irish consumer, who preferred glass bottles. However, with outdoor dining and the scheduled “2021 Summer of Outdoors” that is set to change. With more mandatory outdoor entertaining this year, the wine in bag is now being more seriously considered by a number of Irish wine retailers, so expect to see a lot more of them available to purchase.
WineLab have just launched theirs, a magnum in a bag, which they call a Bagnum. This is a 1.5 Litre bag of Italian wine, which they label as Un’Ombra Bagnum. A Bagnum is simply a vacuum-sealed bag filled with wine. The bag prevents air from getting in and oxidizing the wine, and wine in bag can last for up to six weeks, which compares favourably to a few days for wine stored in a bottle.
Choose from a range of white grape varieties including Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Grigio, or a red wine made from an Italian grape called Refosco. The 3 litre box costs €50 and contains 2 X 1.5 litres of wine. They also have a larger size of bag, the equivalent of 8 bottles, that costs €100 and contains 4 x 1.5 litres, which works out @ roughly €12.50 per 75cl.
You can also buy the wine in bag from retail stockists including: Bottle Shop, Bray; Lennox Grocers, Portobello, Dublin 8; Neighbourhood Wines, Leeson Street Dublin 4.; BoCo in Bolton Street, Dublin 8 and The Arch, in Clifden, Co Galway.
