Berry Bros – Glenmorangie 13-Year-Old – A pleasure to drink

glenmorangie

The Glenmorangie, 13-Year-Old, Cognac Cask is aged first in sweet ex-Bourbon casks for 8 years, then finished in ex-Cognac barrels giving this single-malt-whisky incredible depth, complexity, and balance.

As one of the foremost distilleries in Scotland, Glenmorangie needs hardly any introduction. Their distinctive delicate, fruity style appeals the world over. However, it is their popularisation of the ‘cask finish’ approach to maturation in the 1990s that solidified their place at the cutting edge of innovation in the region. The double maturation process adds an additional layer to their elegant house style and imparts the subtle flavour of the second vessel, in this case barrels used in Cognac making.

Glenmorangie’s Director of Whisky Creation, Dr Bill Lumsden, is famous for his experiments using unusual ageing containers. Previous editions have included those sourced from such diverse regions as Tokaj, Sauternes and Malaga. In this bottling, the French oak gives a delicious hint of toast and spice building on the sumptuous sweetness from its time in ex-bourbon American oak.

With a home nestled in the Highlands, Glenmorangie are keenly focused on building a sustainable future, an attitude firmly aligned with Berry Bros. & Rudd’s own ethos. As such this bottle will not be sold in a cardboard box, minimising packaging and waste and helping to lessen the environmental impact of their products.

Truly a delightful and unique whisky, do let me know if I can tempt you to a bottle or two of this beautiful dram.

“After nearly a decade in ex-Bourbon wood, this splendid Glenmorangie then spent four years in casks that had been used repeatedly in the production of Cognac. Truly golden in colour, the nose is delectably spicy with exotic oak and dried citrus peels. Impeccably judged oak influence on the palate truly weaves subtly liquorice and hints of tobacco through the sweetly fruity spirit. A pleasure to drink, The mouth-filling finish offers further evidence of the master distiller’s skill with endlessly interchanging interplay of nuts and fruits. I’ll be sharing mine with friends after a simple steak-frites.”
Rob Whitehead, Spirits Buyer

“Delectable in every way and moreish to the last drop, the Cognac cask Glenmorangie is sweet, spicy and balanced. The dual cask maturation is evident on both the nose and palate, first the toasted coconut and rich vanilla from the ex-Bourbon then the cedar and sweet spice from the ex-Cognac finish. It is complex yet rounded with dried fruit, toasted nuts, cinnamon, citrus and muscovado sugar. Best drunk after dinner and even better at 4pm on Christmas day”
