Summer sees the Terrace and Gardens at The Merrion come into their own, as we open the doors wide, and The Garden Room Restaurant blends beautifully with its namesake. Seeing these spots in full swing, abuzz with al fresco dining, is always a favourite time. We are very proud to have such an oasis in the heart of Dublin. Our Garden Cabanas, introduced last year, make a welcome return, the perfect place to enjoy The Merrion’s summer classic Lobster Roll perhaps?

Back in the Georgian Era, come summertime, the Lords and Ladies of Dublin’s elegant townhouses would depart the city for their Country Seats. With horses being the transport of the day, travel was at a much slower pace, and so you’ll find the city’s hinterlands dotted with fabulous mansions, set amidst acres of incredible formal gardens, pleasure grounds and parklands.

We’ve rounded up six of the best that are open for you to visit, all within an hour’s drive of The Merrion in this season’s Lord It Up blog. Then, on your return from an intriguing day exploring state bedrooms and stately homes, it could well be cocktail time, so I’m pleased to introduce two new refreshing creations by The Merrion Mixologists: the Midori Spritz, a blend of melon and cucumber notes, with prosecco and soda; and the Limoncello, a delicious fizzing citrus mix.

It’s time to raise a glass to summer in Dublin.

Looking forward to seeing you soon. With all good wishes,

Peter MacCann,

General Manager

Taste the Summer: while The Merrion’s classic Lobster Roll is an annual Terrace favourite, Executive Chef Ed Cooney is also welcoming summer with a fresh seasonal menu in The Garden Room. Including light dishes such as Organic Salmon Gravadlax and Irish Crab Salad, or our iconic Dry Aged Steaks with Watercress; there are also vegan treats: from Celeriac Carpaccio with Tahini, to Miso Aubergine with Charred Broccoli, Teriyaki Sauce and Hummus. Trad is Back: Thursday’s Trad sessions return to The Cellar Bar, each week until the end of August. Relax in the historic and atmospheric setting, sipping a pint of the black stuff, a classic cocktail, or one of our extensive range of fine wines by the glass, while enjoying Irish music at its finest. Good craic, in great company.

Bloomsday June 16: Dublin embraces one of her favourite sons, James Joyce, on June 16 each year, celebrating the day immortalised in his classic Ulysses. As a UNESCO City of Literature, we hold our writers close to our hearts! This is the 100th anniversary of the novel’s publication, so expect exhibitions, theatre, readings, walking tours, tastings of Ulysses-inspired food and more. See the full Festival Programme here until June 18th. A literary – inspired programme also celebrates James Joyce, and other writers past and present at Living Canvas, Europe’s largest screen for contemporary art, and only the second of its kind in the world. Find it at Wilton Park on the banks of the Grand Canal.

Annual Exhibition: The Merrion is renowned for its world class art exhibition, and we’re delighted to share news of the great arty goings on at two of our nearest neighbours. The Royal Hibernian Academy hosts the 192nd Annual Exhibition, a huge showcase of the most cutting edge contemporary and collectible work, until July 24th.  It’s an unmissable snapshot of art in Ireland right now, and admission is free. Meanwhile our friends at The National Gallery of Ireland are showing more than 50 works by Alberto Giacometti, including the first – and last sculptures the Swiss master ever created. Until September 4th; admission by ticket, Hotel Guests can book via The Merrion Concierge.

Horses for Courses: The Royal Dublin Horse Show is an annual calendar highlight, for equine enthusiasts, and for those who just love the social whirl. Runs, August 17th to 21st, with Ladies Day on August 18th, and the nail-biting Longines Nations Cup on Friday August 19th. Hospitality Packages are available, so Hotel Guests can enquire with The Merrion Concierge to discover more.
