World’s Best Vineyards, now in their 5th year are a global wine award for the finest vineyard experience, based on reviews submitted by 500 travel and wine tourism experts.  The Top 50 list is compiled based on nominations  made by a global academy of wine experts.

The World’s Best Vineyards showcases vineyards that offer exceptional wine tourism experiences, those that go beyond simply producing great wines. The ranking showcases vineyards that excel in hospitality, architecture, scenic beauty, wine education, excursions and offer a complete experience.  They work with sponsorship partners that include the regions of DOCa Rioja (Spain), Mendoza (Argentina) and Wines of Germany.

This year,  Argentinian Winery Catena Zapata was awarded the title at an award ceremony in La Rioja, in Spain. Founded in 1902, Catena Zapata is the oldest Argentine family winery still in family hands and is known for its pioneering role in producing Malbec.  Dr. Laura Catena, fourth generation vintner and managing director of Catena Zapata, received the award from  the ceremony host, Tim Atkin MW who said of the winery “Bodega Catena Zapata is a driving force in Argentine winemaking. A winery that played a pivotal role in resurrecting Malbec’s fortunes, pushing Mendoza’s vineyards higher into the Andean foothills, and delving deeply into the country’s many terroirs. The family even founded the Catena Institute of Wine to scientifically examine every aspect of the local soils, rocks and microorganisms and their effect on the vines.”

Acknowledging their achievement, Dr. Laura Catena said, “I am speechless. What a tremendous honour and acknowledgement for my father’s vision of thirty years.  A recognition for our family and for all the hard-working people at Catena – past, present, and future”.
