August Events
This August IMMA Is excited to share another month of free events as part of Summer at IMMA. On Sat 2 Aug join us for a gathering around a campfire where two gifted Traveller storytellers, Chrissie Donoghue Ward and Owenie Ward, bring the magic of Traveller folklore to life. This event Canvas, Campfires & Culture, runs alongside Leanne McDonagh’s series Why the Moon Travels now on show in IMMA Collection: Art as Agency. This is a free event, all are welcome.
On 30 Aug join us for a special celebration to mark the harvest of The Model Plot as the Loy Association of Ireland, Horticulture Students from Inchicore College and artist Deirdre O’Mahony dig the potato crop grown over 2025. The celebrations will include a Loy School Demonstration followed by a crop harvest, feast of the potatoes and an afternoon of singing, led by vocal artist and composer Siobhan Kavanagh and ecofeminist storyteller Sinead Mercier. On 28 Aug an artist talk with Deirdre O’Mahony will take place in association with The Model Plot. Booking required for all events, click here for full details.
We are also delighted to announce the programme is now live for IMMA’s Earth Rising Festival, taking place from 12 -14 Sept. Earth Rising is a a vibrant festival of art, ecology, and ideas that invites you to engage with the big questions of our time through the lens of art, creativity, and community. Throughout August there are lots more workshops, tours, performances, yoga classes and more to choose, including a special late evening screening of The Matrix (1999).

Living Canvas at IMMA

We’ve a jam-packed line-up of films to show you as part of Living Canvas at IMMA, featuring film screenings by Joseph Noonan-Ganley, Anita Delaney, Tamsin Snow, and Avril Corroon which will run until 13 Aug. From 14 Aug we’ll be showing Derek Jarman’s captivating work The Angelic Conversation, followed by films by Deirdre O’Mahony. We’re also delighted to announce we will have a special evening screening of The Matrix (1999) on 14 Aug.

Workshops

Get creative this summer with hands-on workshops at IMMA! Highlights in August include a Shibori dyeing workshop using traditional Japanese techniques, a zine-making session, and an Oak Gall ink-making workshop. Explore seed sovereignty through art, get involved in a poetry reading and drawing session, or join us for a workshop in designing productive urban spaces. With activities running throughout the week for all ages, it’s the perfect time to dive into something new. Please note booking is required for selected workshops.

Add a splash of culture and explore our rich mix of tours and activities set in the beautiful surroundings of IMMA. We’ve plenty to choose from, with family-friendly exhibition tours, Slow Looking Art sessions, tours in our gallery as Gaeilge, lunchtime and evening yoga at IMMA’s Formal Gardens, parent and baby hour at the museum, and biodiversity walks. Talks

Highlights for this month’s Talks programme include a lecture by textile curator Valerie Wilson on Irish patchwork and it’s links to the Quilts of Gee’s Bend; a Heritage week screening and discussion of Picturing Derry with directors Sylvia Stevens and David Fox; and an in-conversation with artist Deirdre O’Mahony on The Model Plot, exploring land use, rural sustainability and climate resilience. All talks are free but booking is required.

Save the Date: Earth Rising Festival

12–14 Sept 2025
This year’s festival is inspired by Staying with the Trouble, IMMA’s current group exhibition based on Donna Haraway’s influential text. The exhibition and the festival explore how we might live differently in a time of planetary breakdown, not by turning away from complexity, but by staying with it, together. From radical talks to joyful workshops, restorative installations to grassroots action, Earth Rising 2025 features over 50 free events designed to inspire, connect, and activate.
