Now Dubbed ‘Fifth Design City’ after the ‘Big Four’, Copenhagen Cultivated a Cult Following Proving that Fun and Functionality are Not Mutually Exclusive – and, to Boot, Named “the Happiest Fashion Week On the Planet!”

Copenhagen Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2027 marked its 20th anniversary by doubling down on its reputation as one of the industry’s most forward-thinking events, blending a decidedly Scandinavian approach to fashion with wearability and practicality.
A whopping 34 shows and presentations were on offer, spanning from established Scandinavian labels like Gestuz, Stine Goya, Henrik Vibskov, Marimekko, Baum & Pferdgarten and Nicklas Slovgaard to budding young designers like the students from The Royal Danish Academy and The Swedish School of Textiles as well as a sprinkling of international guests like New York-based Collina Strada and shining star of Lagos Fashion Week, Iamisigo.
As for collections, in true Scandi fashion offerings were mature in approach, but never too far from the playful, rule-breaking spirit we’ve come to associate with the Danish event.
Trends, trends, trends galore! We spotted many cropped, Capri pants, often pared with layered looks featuring romantic lace, which was a definite move away from the rather rigid silhouette we’ve seen across fashion weeks over the past few seasons. Sheerness and transparent garments were also seen in many collections.
Other garments that were pivoted to a new trend included the pillbox hat, various capes and drapes as well as peplums, which boldly accentuated gorgeous bare midriffs.
The humble and ever-practical flip-flop was the star accessory of the season, firmly anchoring streetwear, sportswear as well as flimsy gowns and cocktail dresses.
As for colour, white stood out as one of the ‘non-colours’ of choice, as did soft butter yellow and caramel shades. But the colour pop shade of the season was definitely ‘slime-green’ in all its renditions – from dull sage to ‘poison’ lime and chartreuse.

1. TURN UP THE VOLUME!
Designers went max this season, overly exaggerating features like sleeves, skirts and trouser legs, more was indeed more!
Pleats, ruffles, ruching – and just generally seriously generous and clever cutting methods – made for silhouettes that looked avant-garde, relaxed, comfortable and super interesting.
Layering and boning added additional volume. Bustles gave an unconventional yet shapely flavour to ensembles. Bows and sleeves were exaggeratedly super-sized, all making for silhouettes that do not follow the trend for the close-cut and body-hugging garments we’ve seen over the past few seasons from the likes of Prada.
And for that we sigh a huge sigh of relief. In these garments one can still look fabulous after a three-course meal and drinks!

2. THE SNOW QUEEN’S SUMMER WARDROBE
So, should the Scandi Snow Queen desire a new Spring/Summer wardrobe, what might she wear?
Certainly white as a dominant colour this season was everywhere to be seen, and minimalist, head-to-toe white, with the addition of a touch of cream or beige as accent, certainly need never be boring.
Texturing, layering, transparency, sequins, rhinestones, lace and piping made for ensembles that felt pure, light, romantic and regal.
We’ve put a few epic suggestions out there, we hope she approves!

3. CRÈME CARAMEL AND A LATTE, PLEASE!
Designers certainly had a sweet tooth this season: shades were just about edible, and reminded one of sauteed butter, toffee, caramel and burnt confectioner’s sugar.
Some garments were peppered with plaid, stars, sequins and rhinestones, others were pared with old faithful classic combinations like black and white.
Some were just unadulterated, head-to-toe caramel – to huge effect.
Note how the humble flip-flop made its sneaky debut this season. That’s what you call practicality and elegance in one outfit!

4. FOR TRANSPARENCY’S SAKE
Pure, sheer transparency was one of Spring 2027’s strongest trends.
Sheer skirts, gauzy dresses, and barely-there layers offered glimpses of skin in an ethereal, artistic fashion rather than in an overtly sexy manner.
Tulle, lace, organza, gauze, embroidery and chiffon layers looked suggestive, super elegant and sophisticated and added to the complexity of pieces.
The eternal classic trend, layering, worked hand in glove with the season’s trend for sheerness, and embellishments like sequins and rhinestones only added to the allure.

5. BUT MAKE IT SHAPELY!
Avant-garde and cleverly constructed garments that effortlessly draped and swished, were spotted across many collections.
Texture added to the allure, as did strategic cut-outs and asymmetry, all making for forward-thinking, intellectual design.
Perhaps this is Scandi design at its best – a far cry from the stereotypical patterning and stripes that we’ve come to associate with design from this part of the world.

6. GREEN, BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT…
A far cry from sweet apple, leafy greens, peppermint or pistachio… instead this season gave us ‘ugly tones’ of gritty, gutsy ‘slime’ green, lime green, sage, moss, algae and chartreuse. These are statement greens, and certainly not for the faint of heart.
They did however pack a punch, and stood their ground magnificently with white, sky blue, caramel, chocolate and aubergine that they shared the runway with.
Some of the yellows bordered on camel, which is a perennial classic shade. Combinations of two tomes of green and yellow also worked a treat. One may speculate that our flame-haired sisters will be the biggest beneficiaries of this special colour trend for Spring/Summer 2027.

7. PEPLUMS PLEASE!
Waists were on display this season in Copenhagen – bare midriffs as well as accented waists. And few garment pieces – bar perhaps belts – do that better than the frilly or flared peplum.
After years of seeing minimalist and body-hugging silhouettes, the peplum gives volume to the hips of dresses, coats, skirts and trousers. These shapes are sculptural and flattering, exaggerating a narrow waist whilst hiding a multitude of sins around the hip area!
Some designers chose to give their peplum more than a cameo role: the peplum at Baum & Pferdgarten, for example, became a belt-like structure in its own right. Viva the peplum!

8. ANIMAL INSTINCT
What would any fashion week worth its weight be without a sprinkling of the eternally glamorous, forever classic leopard print coat or zebra print dress?
This season is no different, and various designers have showcased their trump card, the ultimate statement of glam luxe no matter the season.
Whether in faux fur or African beads, the message is clear: these pieces bring out our animal instinct like few others.
