What is UV 400?

THOMAS SABO Eyewear come with UV protection of 400 and protect sensitive eyes from harmful UV rays.

UV stands for ultraviolet radiation and covers a wavelength range of 100 to 400 nanometres. The ultraviolet radiation is the most energetic part of the optical radiation and whilst it is not visible to the human eye, it is the most harmful.

Due to its biological and physical properties, UV radiation is divided into three levels:

  • UV-A (wavelength up to 400nm)
  • UV-B (wavelength up to 315mn)
  • UV-C (wavelength from 100 up to 280nm)

The shorter the wavelength, the more energetic and damaging is the radiation to your eyes. On especially sunny days, the pupil and lens are in danger as more light is let into the eyes. The unprotected penetration of UV rays can eventually lead to tissue damage in the cornea of the eye. So that your eyes are protected at all times of the day, all lenses from the THOMAS SABO eyewear collection have a UV 400 protection that meets the worldwide-required standards.
