Jennifer Lopez’s High Fashion Hashtag Brings Out Instagram’s Creativity
No one influences trends quite like Jennifer Lopez. In the three decades since she arrived on the scene, the actress-singer has been responsible for popularizing Juicy Couture tracksuits, Versace palm prints, and the very concept of bling [was she really? I did not know this]. Given her prominence, Lopez’s style is regularly copied by fans and peers alike, but the star has used the imitations to her advantage. As one of the hosts on the reality competition World of Dance, Lopez wears multiple outfits per episode, and this season she’s encouraged viewers to recreate the looks via the hashtag #wodoutfitcheck. The folks at home may not have stylists Rob Zangardi and Mariel Haenn to assist, but they’ve managed to get creative when interpreting J.Lo’s costumes and designer pieces.
For last night’s season finale, Lopez went full glam in a gilded Balmain cape from Olivier Rousteing’s spring/summer 2020 collection. The futuristic piece stood out when model Sijia Kang debuted it on Rousteing’s runway last year, but on Lopez, it took on a new verve. Black and silver with thousands of tiny beads, it was precisely the kind of opulent fashion Lopez is known for. Worn with slicked-back hair, diamond drop earrings, and plenty of attitude it made for an arresting look.
Naturally, Lopez’s fanbase had fun emulating their idol online. Some pulled out silver chains and black tulle to get as close to the original as possible, while others detailed dolls with sequins to create J.Lo Barbies. All entrants put their creativity on display, interpreting the idea in a myriad of ways, all of which Lopez shared on her Instagram stories. With red carpet style in short supply and fashion fans itching for a bit of bling, Lopez’s challenge offered a welcome moment of inspiration and glamour.
