Doña Paula Estate celebrates Malbec World Day 10th Edition

Feel free to share:

Malbec World Day (MWD), an initiative created by Wines of Argentina, was first celebrated on April 17th, 2011.  The objective of Malbec World Day was to create a series of historical and cultural events to celebrate Argentine wine as part of the global marketing initiative instigated by Wines of Argentina. The last physical MWD took place in 2019 when over 120 events were held in 100 cities all over the world, including Dublin.

With 41,301 ha planted,  Malbec is the most widely cultivated grape variety  in Argentina.  With exports increasing by 375% in 11 years, today Malbec is globally the grape now most associated with Argentina.  Although Argentina has a continental climate there are two key factors that impact on the quality of the grape; they are latitude and altitude.  Altitude in Mendoza varies from 600 metres to 1,500 metres above sea level.   The higher the altitude of the vineyard the cooler the region.   For every 165 metre increase the average temperature of the vineyard decreases by 1 degree and this directly affects the wine style.

Malbec originated in South West France, but has found its natural home in the high altitude vineyards of Argentina’s Mendoza region. Argentine Malbec originally came from Bordeaux in 1853, when it was brought to South America by Aimé Pouget.  Today in Argentina it accounts for 58% of all red grapes planted there. Malbec produces red wine that is usually low in acidity, high in tannins, and has an inky-black colour. Aromas and flavours of red plums and blackcurrants are common, together with lovely hints of chocolate and mocha.

This year, why not celebrate the 2021 edition of MWD by taking home an Argentine Malbec and enjoying it  with a good quality steak.  Look out for one of Ireland’s best loved Malbec’s  the range produced by Doña Paula Estate.  Worth a look are three of the premium wines from their portfolio, listed below:
