FRESH from their bronze medal win at the Ladies European Championship in Milan Italy (see https://pynck.com/2021/10/gold-for-italy-at-the-european-polo-championship.html at Pynck.com), the Celtic polo team’s April Kent and Siobhan Herbst are preparing to represent Ireland with a celebration lunch at Polo Wicklow, Wicklow Ireland.

Entry to the lunch for €35 per person along with a spectacular livestreamed raffle of lucrative prizes will raise funds for the history-making team, scheduled to play at the Argentine Ladies Open in Buenos Aires. The tournament in December will be the first time any lady from Ireland has played in the Open, an annual event since 1893 that is considered to be the ‘Olympics of Polo’.

The bronze medal won at the Ladies European Championship in September has also qualified the Irish team including Siobhan Herbst and April Kent for the World Polo Championship, taking place next April.

“Our life goal is to represent Ireland in the Ladies Polo Open in Argentina,” said Siobhan Herbst. “It is the ‘world cup’ of ladies polo and the highest level you can get in this sport.”

Irish polo is often euphemistically known as ‘hurling on horseback’ with riders reaching speeds of up to 45 kilometres per hour during matches. The Argentine Ladies Open is set to take place in the ‘cathedral of polo’ in Palermo, Argentina.

“Ireland produces some of the best thoroughbreds in the world, many being retrained from the (horse racing) track and going on to play polo at high levels,” said April Kent. “We have the horses (and) the horsemen and we have the ball skills. Putting this together we (women) should be making more of a mark on the polo world.”
