Gold for Italy at the European polo championship
THE Italian ladies team has scored gold at the European polo championship, taking on Ireland, England and Germany in a tournament of four days (22-26 September) on home ground at La Mimosa Polo Club in Milan.
The gold won on Sunday 26 September on 6.5 goals to 6 from England by Maitana Marre for the injured Constanza Marchiorello, Camila Rossi, Alice Coria and Ginevra Visconti was the second for Italy following similar success at Chantilly France in 2017. Gold was the colour as well for the men’s Italian team just a week previous at the European Championship in Sotogrande, Spain.
“It was a difficult week due to the injury incurred by Constanza Marchiorello,” said team spokesperson and veteran player Ginevra Visconti. “The girls, however, were all very good, from Camila Rossi to Alice Coria and Maitana Marre and the final victory repays us for all the problems we had to face.”
The European championship at La Mimosa Polo Club was the third Federation of International Polo tournament for the ladies, securing silver in 2018 at Villa a Sesta Tuscany along with two gold medals. Italy is the only team to have played in all three finals, their latest earlier this month in Milan.
“They were two particularly intense weeks for us and satisfaction is at maximum for having managed to conquer titles with the men’s team and the women’s,” said Italian Federation of Equestrian Sports polo department head Alessandro Giachetti. It sends a significant signal from Italian polo, an extra incentive to continue to do well for the spread of this discipline especially at youth level.”
The Ladies European Polo Championship launched in 2017 at Chantilly France with the win by Italy. Launched in 1987 with the first tournament in Argentina, the European Polo Championship is governed by the Federation of International Polo (FIP).
