Inspiring home trends to change the view of 2021
HOLD onto that paintbrush – the lockdown home and outdoor living space uptick trend is set to continue and this year is all about nature-inspired colour.

Lockdown has seen more and more focus on home comforts that have already this year trumped aesthetics when choosing furniture and the trend towards soft furnishings such as natural fibre throws and cushions is on the rise as well.
For colour palettes, think muted greys and mushroom tones in combination with illuminating ochres and deep indigo blues and forest greens. Natural fibres are extending as well to hanging lamps paired with brass and gold.
“I think 2021 is going to be all about liveable luxury and versatility in design,” said American interior designer Kate Lester late last year to Good Housekeeping Magazine. “So many people have had to transition over the past year that they are rethinking less-used spaces and embracing furniture concepts that play double duty. (The year is) all about durable fabrics, comfortable upholstery and furniture pieces that are versatile and chic.”
As more and more of us have been indoors since last year the focus on our everyday surroundings has been a natural outgrowth aimed at creating a functional, well adapted home that reflects our personalities and lifestyles as much as it speaks of comfort. It has been out with the beiges and pale neutrals for the most part, and in with colours that embrace that sense of comfort and familiarity and much of about bringing the outdoors in.

Pantone Colour Institute’s Laurie Pressman recognised colour as a form of communication to engage and connect: “(Colour) reflects what is happening in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that colour can hope to answer. As society continues to recognise colour as a critical form of communication and a way to symbolise thoughts and ideas, many designers and brands are embracing the language of colour to engage and connect.”
To begin with, the beginning of a smart solution to the way we are living for the time being – in lockdown for the foreseeable – is to reimagine our living space. Out of all we miss the most, what can we bring into our homes?
Very much of this year’s palette, even in lockdown depends very much on what can work with our personal taste: those nature-inspired earth tones, even when as pale as spring green are working well with dark palettes and some designers are seeing that dark is where it is at.

“My colour for 2021 is Darjeeling,” said American designer Gail Davis. “I recently had the opportunity to use this expressive colour in a guest bedroom and this colour did not disappoint, being the perfect backdrop for the headboard and artwork.”
In this uncertain year there is one thing that is certain, that this will be no wishy-washy year of colour but one that is vibrantly bold, rich and multi-tonal.
